Hyderabad: It is evening time and your tummies might be making some growling sounds for something interesting to eat. Did momos cross your mind already? Haha! Don’t worry, you are not the only ones increasingly falling in love with the steamed dumplings.
Momos, which once was a snack available only in places in North India has now throbbed the hearts of several Hyderabadis and is just increasingly becoming the most sought for evening snack among the city dwellers.
“I actually only used to see what momos were in series or films. Although they were available in some authentic Chinese restaurants in the city, they were either too expensive or just didn’t appeal to many. However, now all of a sudden I see a major chunk of people in the city just drooling over the dish,” shares Vani J, an IT employee in the city.
Observing that several migrants belonging majorly to the north eastern states of India have found their place in Hyderabad and have started selling their speciality – momos, Karthik Narayanan, an MBA student from the city, shares, “Now, you may find a momos seller in every major junction in the city. Also, several food businesses have started adding momos to their menus as there has been increasing demand from the public. Currently, the cuisine is also trending highly on social media platforms and many want to try the steamed dumplings just to post a story on Instagram or Snapchat.”
Well, many believe that the secret behind the craze for momos is the red chilli chutney that comes along with it. Made using tomatoes, chillies and spices, the momo chutney is something that can surely take you to another world with just one bite of it. Meanwhile, there has been quite a lot of experimentation with momos as well. In addition to the steamed momos – with chicken or vegetable cabbage as stuffing – even the fried ones have found the same craze among Hyderabadis.
“Since it has now entered Hyderabad – the city of food experimentation, I’m sure there will be more varieties of momos very soon. Also, momos might also turn into an accompaniment with South Indian tiffins in various ways – momo chutney dosa or simply momo dosa,” shares Ajay Donthi who runs a Chinese restaurant in the city, with a laugh.
What is a momo?
Momo is a type of steamed dumpling with some form of filling – usually meat or vegetables. The dish, which is a traditional delicacy in Nepal, Tibet and even among several communities in Bhutan, found a major market in north Indian regions like Darjeeling, Ladakh, Sikkim, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh. However, now the dish seems to make its presence even in South India.
