Liver transplant performed with no blood transfusion at Kamineni Hospitals

Hyderabad: Transplant surgeons at Kamineni Hospitals have performed a cadaver liver transplant surgery on a 49-year-old male patient hailing from Durg, Chhattisgarh. The hospital surgeons in a statement on Monday said that the liver transplant was performed with a blood loss of less than 500 ml and the patient did not require a blood transfusion.
The patient was suffering from liver cancer caused by liver cirrhosis or Hepatitis ‘B’ or ‘C’ infections and needed a donor’s liver. The surgeons first explored the possibility of conducting a living related liver transplant. However, none of the relatives of the patient had his matching blood group of O positive. As a result, the patient was registered in the State-run Jeevandan organ donation programme and waited for a month to find a suitable matching cadaver liver.
The cadaver donor liver was donated by the family members of a 30-year-old- worker from Singareni Collieries, who was declared brain dead after a road accident. The surgeons conducted the liver transplant on July 14 with a blood loss of less than 500 ml, the press release said.
The surgery was performed by Dr Rajashekar Perumalla, Hepatobiliary and Liver Transplant Specialist, Dr Kishan Nunsavata, Medical Gastroenterologist, Dr Biswaroop Pal, Liver Transplant ICU Specialist and Dr Satyanayana, Surgical Gastroenterologist.
