Mahabubabad: The police have arrested four persons including a constable working with the 4th Battalion of the TSSP, Mamnoor, for their alleged involvement in the gang rape of 23-year-old woman of Alair village in Nellikuduru mandal on Thursday.
The accused have been identified as Yata Sagar (29), an autorickshaw driver, SK Naseem (29), a merchant and husband of a former MPTC, SK Saddam Hussain (29), a police constable, and Koilakonda Jagadeesh (30), a flower merchant. All of the accused are residents of the same village. The woman, who was raped on the night of February 17 by three persons, died on February 22 at the Government Hospital, Mahabubabad, while undergoing treatment after consuming pesticide on February 18 at her residence. She was allegedly raped by the accused when she went to her friend’s home in the same village.
“Based on a complaint lodged by her younger brother, an FIR was registered under section 376(D), 306, 354(D) R/W 34 the IPC at the Nellikudur police station. We have taken three persons into custody immediately. Meanwhile, we have come to know that one of the accused, SK Saddam Hussain, was not at the village during the incident,” SP Sharath Chandra Pawar told media persons here on Thursday.
It is learnt that the girl had been exploited in the past by Shaik Saddam Hussain due to her intimacy with him. “We have formed four special teams led by Additional SP Yogesh Gautham and are collecting all the technical and forensic evidence considering it as a special case. We are making all efforts to ensure that the culprits get stringent punishment for rape and abettment to suicide by producing the accused before the concerned court,” the SP added.
It may be added here that the victim, who cleared intermediate a couple of years ago, was preparing for police constable exam by attending classes at Mahabubabad, shuttling between her village and the town. While the victim’s mother died several years ago, she and her younger brother were living with her father, a lorry driver.
Meanwhile, Tribal, Women and Child Welfare Minister Satyavathi Rathod expressed shock over the incident, and instructed police authorities to ensure stringent punishment. She also asked them to take steps to prevent recurrence of such incidents. The Minister said that she would take steps to provide all support to the family of the victim.
