Hyderabad: The Rachakonda Special Operations Team busted an online cricket betting racket and arrested one person at Saroornagar here on Thursday. Police seized Rs 15.7 lakh, credit cards and a car apart from freezing Rs 69.6 lakh in various banks. The total worth of the seized property is Rs 95.3 lakh.
The arrested person was Shaik Sadiq (25), a resident of Achampet in Nagarkurnool, presently staying at Saroornagar. Police said he was organizing an illegal online cricket betting by staying at different places in Hyderabad. He became a sub-organizer to run cricket betting by getting IDs from bookies, who organize the illegal activity online.
Officials said as per Shaik Sadiq’s version, the actual organizers designed several online cricket betting sites which are available on the internet. He subscribed and signed into such sites by creating an account using his personal details and got an user ID and password from the bookies by paying Rs.10,000.
“Once he gets a user ID and password, it is valid for a month. He then adds interested punters by contacting them on social media. When any cricket league is scheduled, he sends a link to the punters who in turn subscribe to the link and place bets by sending the amount to Sadiq’s bank,” Rachakonda Police Commissioner Mahesh Bhagwat said, adding that the punters made every transaction with Sadiq, who also collected money from them and placed bets individually.
Following a tip-off, police raided the betting premises and caught him while organizing betting on a T20 match between Australia and Bangladesh.
