Cybercrime cases drop sharply across Hyderabad tri-commissionerates in 2025
Cybercrime cases across Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Rachakonda dropped sharply in 2025, with police registering 15,105 cases compared to 20,574 in 2024. Authorities attribute the decline to public awareness campaigns and stricter action against cyber fraud networks.
Hyderabad: During the year 2025, cybercrime cases in the tri-commissionerates of Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Rachakonda have come down sharply. A total of 15,105 cases were registered in 2025, as against 20,574 cases of cybercrimes booked by the police during the year 2024.
The police attribute the fall in the cybercrime cases to the public awareness launched by them through different mediums such as street corner meetings, online campaigns, and awareness programs at educational institutions, shopping malls and offices.
“The cybercrimes have come down due to awareness in the public. The number of arrests of the offenders involved in the cybercrime cases increased during the year,” said S V Naga Lakshmi, DCP Cybercrimes, Rachakonda.
Digital fraud, trading fraud and investment fraud cases remained the dominant online crimes during the year with the three commissionerates. The investment fraud cases in the tri-commissionerates stood at 3,508 while a total of 248 cases of digital fraud were recorded.
Digital frauds were the biggest contributor to the overall losses incurred by citizens through cyber frauds with Hyderabad police recording a loss of Rs. 33.81 crores in 86 cases.
The highest number of cybercrimes in the tri commissionerates was recorded by the Cyberabad police who registered 7636 cases. “The cyber-crime cases are more in Cyberabad because of the IT professionals and tech-savvy residents,” said an official.
Cyber criminals are more dependent on the mule accounts operated by individuals in exchange for commission. The amounts collected from the cyber fraud victims are transferred to mule accounts and then diverted to a layer of accounts before being pumped out of the country.
Hyderabad Commissioner of Police VC Sajjanar said the police are making a database of the mule account suppliers and taking stern action against those supplying the account credentials to the cyber fraudsters. “We have held high level meetings with the Reserve Bank of India officials and discussed mule accounts. Soon there will be a mechanism in place to check the mule accounts and prevent misuse of bank accounts,” he said.
