Sanskrit is a second or third language in Indian schools. Students and parents think that Sanskrit is a scoring subject. Still, parents are apprehensive that their ward is unable to speak in Sanskrit or at least give their self-introduction also in Sanskrit.

What are the reasons for this?

Though Sanskrit is a scoring subject, students forget to sharpen the four LSRW skills of Sanskrit; listening, speaking, reading and writing. They focus much on the last two skills (writing and reading). That is the main reason for lacking in this language. No one can be linguistic without learning all four language skills. For this, NEP-2020 guidelines also insist upon learning by doing

The child should be able to apply the LSRW skills of Sanskrit in their life. Learning won’t happen without experience. The verb forms that students learn in the class, are to be practiced in written and spoken form also.

He /she has to speak to his parents, friends, family members or at least to his Sanskrit students in the class in Sanskrit. If parents and children aim at speaking skills, then real learning of language starts. The child should listen to the teacher in class for Sanskrit vocabulary, watch YouTube videos in Sanskrit and Sanskrit news in radio and TV channels. Then, students can frame their sentences using active and passive vocabulary in the lessons.

There should be an ambiance created for listening and speaking in the classroom by Sanskrit teacher and by parents at home. Parents need to act as good listeners to their children and encourage them to speak in Sanskrit at home. Next reading and writing skills would be done by children on their own under the guidance of the teacher. Teachers should teach Sanskrit in the classes in a communicative way. Hence, Sanskrit is not only a subject to score but also a language to speak.
