Hyderabad: Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation (MMC) processed nearly 7,000 metric tonnes of floral waste generated during religious festivals into organic products, including incense and dhoop sticks.
MMC Additional Commissioner (Sanitation) Raghu Prasad said, that more than 6,400 metric tonnes of waste came from Ganesh immersion events, while nearly 400 metric tonnes were collected during Bathukamma celebrations.”
MMC commissioner Vinay Krishna Reddy said, the MMC collaborated with Pakka Organics to establish dedicated collection kiosks at major immersion points, including Safilguda Lake.
The kiosks collected flowers offered during religious rituals and floral waste brought with Ganesh idols. MMC arranged separate collection and recycling instead of mixing the flowers with regular garbage.
Pakka Organics dried the collected flowers and processed them into powder, which was blended with herbs, natural resins, wood powders and plant-based binders to manufacture incense and dhoop sticks, said MMC commissioner.
Reddy said the scientific collection and repurposing of floral waste supported environmental protection and reduced pressure on municipal waste management systems.
