Malkajgiri railway junction may become secondary terminal for Hyderabad

A fresh proposal could transform Malkajgiri railway junction into a mini terminal for Hyderabad, with additional tracks and loop lines. The development may ease pressure on Kacheguda, improve passenger connectivity and create scope for more MMTS services in the surrounding areas.

Hyderabad: The Malkajgiri railway junction could be on its way to becoming an important secondary railway terminal for the city, with the South Central Railway’s Hyderabad Division reportedly initiating a fresh proposal to develop the station as a Mini Terminal.

The proposed development is expected to address long-standing demands from passengers and railway users for better infrastructure at Malkajgiri and could also provide the railway with additional operational flexibility in handling trains originating from or terminating in the Hyderabad region.

According to the proposal, the development could involve the construction of additional railway tracks, loop lines and other supporting infrastructure at Malkajgiri. The additional facilities are expected to help distribute train movements and reduce operational pressure on the existing Kacheguda Terminal, particularly during peak periods.

If the proposal is implemented, Malkajgiri could potentially become a starting or terminating point for selected passenger and express services. Railway users have particularly sought connectivity from Malkajgiri towards Kurnool City, Nizamabad and other destinations.

The expanded infrastructure could also create scope for running additional MMTS services in different directions, improving suburban connectivity for commuters in the rapidly developing areas around Malkajgiri.

The concept of developing Malkajgiri Junction as a second terminal for the Hyderabad Division is not new and was originally mooted several years ago. However, owing to various administrative considerations, the plan was subsequently shifted to Charlapalli, where terminal development has been taken up.

Despite the shift, passenger groups in Malkajgiri continued to press for expansion of the local railway station. The Train Travellers Association, Malkajgiri, has for several years been pursuing the construction of an additional platform, more tracks and improved passenger amenities.

The renewed proposal comes amid frequent inspections by senior railway officials and continued representations from the association and local passengers.
