Vizianagaram: A van driver who suspected the fidelity of his fiancee, attempted to kill the woman by dousing her with petrol and setting her ablaze at Chowdiwada village under Pusapatirega police station limits in the district in the early hours of Friday.
According to police, A Rambabu of Naaruva village in the neighbouring Srikakulam district, fell in love with Gali Ramulamma (21), of Chowdiwada a couple of years ago. Their marriage was fixed for October. However, Rambabu began suspecting Ramulamma of having an affair with another man and said he would not marry her. However, her family members insisted that the marriage should be performed.
Upset with this, Rambabu went to Ramulamma’s house after midnight and doused her in petrol and set her on fire. Her elder sister Santoshi and her son Aravind tried to stop Rambabu, but he threatened to kill them too.
All the three escaped with 20 per cent burns as Santoshi called the police on Disha app who rushed to the spot and shifted them to hospital. Chief Minister Y S Jaganmohan Reddy, who enquired with the police about the incident, directed the officials to shift the victims to Visakhapatnam city for better medical treatment.
Deputy Chief Minister Pamula Pushpa Srivani, Municipal Administration minister Botsa Satyanarayana, and senior officials called on the victim at the hospital and assured the family members that the government would extend them all possible help.
