Hyderabad: A member of a music band died under suspicious circumstances during a ‘baraat’ at PJR Colony in Raidurgam here in the early hours of Saturday.

While the victim’s family alleged he died due to police manhandling, the police have denied it and said he died of a cardiac arrest.

The incident occurred around 12.30 am, when the mobile patrol vehicle staff on receiving a complaint regarding sound pollution from local residents, reached the spot and asked the music band to stop playing and also asked people taking part in the wedding procession to disperse.

A video clip of the incident shows the victim Naresh Kumar (30), a musician playing the keyboard in the band, who walked towards the police patrol vehicle suddenly collapsing on the road. He was immediately shifted to a nearby private hospital, where he was declared dead.

Naresh’s family alleged the police had manhandled Naresh and three other members of the band, which resulted in his death. Madhapur DCP M.Venkateshwarlu, clarifying on the incident, said Naresh was not assaulted by the police team, but accidentally hit himself against the bumper of a truck carrying lights and fell down.

“After falling down, he stood up again and walked towards the mobile patrol vehicle and spoke to the officials. It was then that he collapsed. Our team with the help of his friends, shifted him to the hospital, but he had died by then,” Venkateshwarlu said, adding that he was suspected to have suffered a cardiac arrest.

The Raidurgam police have booked a case and took up investigation. Officials said the case was being probed from all angles. An autopsy was conducted at the Osmania General Hospital morgue on Saturday.

“Doctors too have opined he died of a cardiac arrest. More details including the actual cause of death will be made known from the autopsy report. We are still examining the CCTV footage from other spots,” the DCP added.
