Hyderabad: The Commissioner’s Task Force (North) caught one person who cheated women after befriending them through social media. The police recovered 18 tolas of gold worth Rs 9 lakh from him.
The man, Shaik Mohd Rafi alias Karthik Varma of East Godavari in Andhra Pradesh, was a polytechnic course dropout and came to Hyderabad from his hometown a few years ago.
“Mohd Rafi contacted the victim women through Facebook and Whatsapp and told them he was from an NRI family and that his parents were settled abroad. After befriending them, he made them believe that he was in love with them, and later on the pretext of some financial emergency, collected money and gold ornaments from them. He then cut off contact with them,” DCP (Task Force) P Radha Kishan Rao said.
Based on a complaint, the police booked a case and arrested him.
