Hyderabad: A toddy shop owner’s attempt to attract more customers by selling toddy laced with powdered marijuana to ensure a better high, boomeranged after the Vikarabad police came to know of it and arrested him under the provisions of the NDPS Act.
K Suresh Goud, 21, a resident of Malkapur village of Tandur mandal in Vikarabad, reportedly got into mixing toddy with powdered marijuana from an acquaintance in Gulbarga of Karnataka. He came to know that this would not only enhance the ‘kick’, but also improve the taste. After getting the contraband from Gulbarga, Goud started lacing the toddy with marijuana powder in his shop at Malkapur. Initially, the response from customers was moderate but as days progressed, Goud’s toddy, which was nicknamed ‘Black Dog’ by ‘fans’, became quite popular.
However, this rubbed the other toddy shop owners on the wrong side as they found their customers deserting them and heading to Goud’s. On enquiry, they came to know that Goud was mixing some ‘substance’ with toddy. Soon enough, an anonymous message went to the police, pointing out that Goud was mixing marijuana powder in his toddy. A police team from Karankote police station reached the shop shortly, and after collecting samples, arrested Goud under the NDPS Act.
Over the last few weeks, Goud sold over 200 bottles of toddy each costing Rs 20. The Prohibition and Excise department officials also inspected the shop and collected samples for analysis.
