Hyderabad: An MTech student of a private engineering college who lost heavily in cricket betting and incurred huge debts, killed his mother and sister allegedly for money to pay off his debts in Ravalkol village of Medchal.
According to the police, P Sainath Reddy (23) lost huge amounts after placing bets on cricket matches. He then plotted to kill the two women hoping to inherit the family property, sell it and clear his debts. He allegedly laced food with pesticide and served it to his mother P Sunitha (44) and sister Anuja Reddy (22) on November 23. After battling for their lives for more than a week, Sunitha and Anusha died while undergoing treatment.
According to the police, relatives and villagers grew suspicious and alerted the police just before the final rites of the two women. The cops immediately questioned Sainath, who had admitted them to a hospital saying they had food poisoning, confessed to the killings.
Police said Sainath’s father passed away a few years ago, leaving Sainath, his mother Sunitha, and sister Anusha. Sainath was pursuing engineering and also working for a private firm.
“After his father’s death, he got involved in betting and lost huge amounts. When he came to know that his father’s insurance amount was in his mother’s bank account, he withdrew the money without her knowledge and spent that too on betting. However, he kept losing money. He also stole his mother’s gold jewelry and sold it,” police said.
Police have found that Sainath was using mobile apps for cricket betting and that he had availed loans from agencies that operated through mobile apps.
