Hyderabad: A man, who killed his wife allegedly suspecting her fidelity and performed her final rites claiming her to have died of Covid-19, was arrested by the Vanasthalipuram police here on Saturday.

The woman R. Kavitha (21), was murdered by her husband R.Vijay Kumar Naik (25), an auto-rickshaw driver by smothering at their house in Vaidehi Nagar in Vanasthalipuram on June 18.

Police said Vijay suspecting Kavitha’s fidelity picked up frequent fights with her. In order to eliminate her, he murdered her after one such argument and then informed her parents that she had died of Covid.

“He took the body in his auto-rickshaw to their native place in Dugalya village, Pedda Adisherlapally mandal of Nalgonda district. There, he quickly finished the final rites and other rituals without allowing anyone to touch her body in the name of Covid,” said Mahesh Bhagwat, Police Commissioner, Rachakonda.

However, Kavitha’s parents and relatives suspected foul play in her death, and her mother D.Bujji lodged a complaint with the Vanasthalipuram police against Vijay Kumar, six days after her body was buried.

The Vanasthalipuram police swiftly acted upon the complaint and got the body exhumed with the permission of the Mandal Revenue Officer of Pedda Adisherla Pally Mandal, Nalgonda district and arranged for spot autopsy.

“During the course of investigation, the police verified and found that Vijay Kumar got his wife tested for Covid, but the result came as negative and in a week’s time he killed her and falsely claimed that she succumbed to the virus to evade police. None of the relatives closely inspected the body even though they were suspecting foul play,” Bhagwat said.

Further investigation revealed the couple had been having misunderstandings, with Vijay Kumar also suspecting her fidelity. He was produced before the court for remanding in judicial custody.
