Man lynched, another injured over goat theft suspicion in Jharkhand

A 35-year-old man was beaten to death and another injured after villagers allegedly attacked them on suspicion of goat theft in Jharkhand's Khunti district. Police registered an FIR, launched an investigation, and said no arrests have been made in the mob assault case

Khunti: A 35-year-old man was beaten to death and another injured allegedly by villagers on suspicion of goat theft in Jharkhand’s Khunti district, police said on Tuesday.

The incident occurred late on Sunday in Bindadiri village within the Murhu Police Station limits, when locals beat two of four people on charges of goat theft, a senior officer said, adding that the two others escaped from the spot.

The deceased, identified as Dildar Ansari, was a resident of Sisai in Gumla district.

“Four people allegedly travelling in a car had gone to the village to steal goats. Villagers caught two of them and two others managed to escape with the vehicle. The two were thrashed badly by villagers,” Khunti SDPO Mangal Singh Jamuda said.

After receiving information, a police team took the two to a hospital, but Dildar succumbed to his injuries on the way, he said.

The deceased’s body was handed over to his family after the post-mortem. An FIR was lodged based on the injured person’s statement, the SDPO said.

No arrests have been made so far, and the investigation is underway, the officer added.
