Mancherial: A family bid a tearful farewell to their pet dog by performing the final rites at Naikapuguda village in Kasipet mandal on Friday. The incident went viral on social media soon after it was posted online, drawing attention of scores of people.

Bhuneni Raju and his family adopted a dog about six years ago, which eventually became part of their family. The entire family was saddened following the death of the canine. However, Raju acknowledged the bond of the dog with the family by conducting the funerals on par with humans. His act won laurels and has become a talk of the town.

Raju said he honoured the dog for being a member of his family and for showing the trust over the years by performing the last rites. He created a wooden structure for carrying the body with adequate cushioning made with paddy straws. Later, he along with a friend cremated the body.
Vemula Krishna, sarpanch of the village, said that Raju’s act reflected his humanity and compassion towards the dog known for unflinching loyalty. He said he had set an example to others in treating the pet animals on par with humans. The photos and news were widely shared on WhatsApp groups and other social media platforms.
