Siddipet: Irregularities in the allotment of Indiramma housing resurfaced on Wednesday when a man attempted to immolate himself after allegedly being denied a house at the last minute in Palamakula village of Nanganur mandal.
The man, identified as Srikanth, squatted on the busy Siddipet–Hanmakonda road and parked his motorbike on the carriageway, causing traffic disruption. Holding a bottle filled with petrol, he threatened to set himself ablaze, accusing the local Indiramma housing committee, comprising Congress leaders, of deliberately excluding him from the list of beneficiaries.
Srikanth said he was initially shortlisted for the housing scheme but his name was removed at the final stage due to vested interests. He alleged that despite meeting all eligibility criteria, the committee arbitrarily denied him the allotment.
Locals and officials rushed to the spot and managed to prevent Srikanth from taking the extreme step. They snatched the petrol bottle from his hands and pacified him before the situation escalated further.
