Jagtial: A combination of accusations, claims and protests led to tension at TR Nagar in Jagtial rural mandal and brought traffic to a halt on the Karimnagar-Jagitial on Friday.
The high drama played out on the streets had its origins in the death of one Orsu Ramesh, a 30-year-old daily wage labourer, who died at the Karimnagar district headquarters hospital following an illness two days ago.
Ramesh’s family, which believed that he died of sorcery practiced by one Pullaiah, took the body to his house on Friday and thrashed him and his wife. Pullaiah ‘admitted’ that he ‘killed’ Ramesh through sorcery but offered to bring back the dead to life. He then proceeded to perform some puja that went on for two hours. Jagitial police, who came to know about the disturbance, rushed to the spot and tried to shift the body to the hospital for post-mortem. This infuriated Ramesh’s relatives who staged a road blockade on the outskirts of the town, bringing traffic to a grinding halt for over half an hour.
Pullaiah and his wife were taken into custody by the police, who also returned Ramesh’s body to his family after the post-mortem. Though doctors declared that he was dead, the family continued to insist that he could be brought back to life and asked the police to bring back Pulaiah to ‘complete his job.’
