Mancherial: Womenfolk who could not celebrate the annual Bathukamma festival last year on account of Covid-19 pandemic, celebrated the floral festival with enthusiasm and in large numbers this year, thanks to the extensive vaccination drive that seems to have kept the spread of Coronavirus under check.
After a low-key affair last year, women were excited to take part in the festivities this year with the district registering only 30 positive cases per day. While women residing in rural pockets gathered various flowers from the forests, those in urban areas bought flowers from the markets. They prepared idols of the goddess, stacking the flowers in conical shape.
“I waited to celebrate the floral festival for a year. I can participate in the celebrations without fear of getting infected by the virus. I am elated to meet my friends and join them in the festivities. The credit should go to both the Central and State government for taking up the massive vaccination drive,” Bhavana Rohini, a resident of Mancherial town said.
The women, dressed in their best, flocked junctions and temples decorated with electric lights. They danced to folk songs while clapping and circumambulating the deity. They crooned songs hailing the goddess for inspiring them. They presented Naivedyam to the deity and exchanged it among themselves after immersing the idols in ponds, irrigation tanks and streams.
Meanwhile, colonies and streets have come alive with the grand celebrations of the festival. Folk songs are being played to mark the occasion. The venues are lit by vibrant lights. Cultural programmes are being held in certain places, enthralling audiences. CCTV cameras were installed to ensure surveillance of the venues in a few places.
