Hyderabad: Karnataka international sprinter Manikanta Hoblidhar suffered stomach cramps on Thursday night. More than 20 hours later, he emerged as the fastest male athlete at the 65th National Open Athletics Championships here on Friday.
Hoblidhar is a fierce competitor. On Friday evening, he showed no signs of discomfort from the stomach ailment he had suffered the previous night. He clocked 10.25 seconds to win gold but fell short of improving his own meet record of 10.19 seconds, set last year.
“I was pretty confident of improving my personal best here in Delhi, but missed out because of stomach cramps,” the Karnataka sprinter said. “I am happy with my performance, as I have been undergoing rehabilitation since April this year.”
Earlier in the morning session, it was heartbreak for Services Sports Control Board (SSCB) race walker Servin Sebastian. He crossed the finish line first in the men’s 21km race walk but was handed a two-minute penalty for a technical rules violation, dashing his hopes of winning gold. He eventually finished fourth in 1:32:46.00.
Suraj Panwar was declared the winner of the men’s 21km race walk.
