Hyderabad: In the fight against the threat to public health posed by quacks practicing allopathy under the guise of Rural Medical Practitioners (RMPs) in Telangana, the Telangana State Medical Council (TSMC) in the last one year has filed 400 FIRS against such individuals and served notices on 40 doctors suspected of facilitating the quacks.

With the present senior officer bearers of the Medical Council recognizing the need to curtail quackery, this is for the first time in Telangana State that a concerted effort has been launched in collaboration with TS Drug Control Administration (TSDCA) to take legal action on individuals with no MBBS degree but practicing allopathy.

Apart from laying special focus on quacks, in the last one year, the officer bearers of the Medical Council reduced the fee for registration and renewal by 50 percent for all doctors. In fact, senior doctors above 65 years have been exempted from even payment of renewal fee.

For the first time, the TS Medical Council also collaborated with the National Medical Commission (NMC) and conducted a training cum hands on workshop for experts appointed in misconduct/appeal cases with all Professors in Government medical colleges in Hyderabad.

The Medical Council in the State is also doing full-fledged online renewals, issuing online good standing certificates without visiting or wasting the valuable tome of doctors. “Earlier, doctors used to stand in lone queues to get such paperwork done. There was a time when doctors used to visit the Council office and reserve their position in the queue by marking it with their names on a piece of paper. Now, everything is online,” said vice-chairman, TSMC, Dr G Srinivas.

The Council also recently issued accreditation to 6 scientific doctor associations including IMA Warangal / API (Association of Physicians of India) / ISA to conduct CPD (Continuing Professional Development) programs in district areas for half, one credit point also according NMC guidelines.
