Hyderabad: More than two years after the Congress government assumed office in Telangana, plans to expand the Medical Devices Park at Sultanpur have not progressed. The delay comes despite the government stating that the life sciences sector is a priority area. It has also announced the Telangana Next-Gen Life Sciences Policy 2026-2030.
However, progress on the ground remains unclear. It is not known whether the delay is due to administrative reasons or an attempt to move away from initiatives launched by the previous BRS government.
The Medical Devices Park at Sultanpur was established in 2017 by the BRS government to promote “Made in Telangana” products in line with the “Atma Nirbhar Bharat” initiative. The park spreads across 300 acres and houses 65 companies. These firms export products to more than 89 countries.
The facility is described as Asia’s largest stent manufacturing hub with a capacity to produce one million stents and 1.25 million balloon catheters. Companies in the park manufacture minimally invasive coronary systems, surgical products, ophthalmic equipment, cosmetic and dental devices, and medical dressings.
The park has attracted international manufacturers, innovators and research institutions due to its infrastructure, regulatory-aligned facilities and industrial ecosystem. Considering these factors, the previous government planned to expand the park by another 300 acres.
A site was initially identified at Chandanvelly in Rangareddy district. However, Assembly elections were held before the plan could move forward and the Congress came to power. Since then, there has been little progress on the expansion proposal. Officials later examined land near the existing park in Sultanpur, but found it unsuitable because of private land holdings and quarry pits.
Officials of the Telangana Industrial Infrastructure Corporation Limited (TGIIC) said efforts are ongoing to identify about 300 acres of suitable land. Two parcels were shortlisted at Bharat Future City and the Industrial Park in Zaheerabad. However, the process stalled due to administrative reasons.
Officials said the existing park at Sultanpur is almost fully occupied and there is a need to either expand it or establish another park. The issue is under discussion with senior authorities, a TGIIC official said.
