Hyderabad: Rachakonda police on Saturday urged men not to make half-naked video calls on WhatsApp with people they’ve met on Facebook or any other social media platform as a new scam that involves video calling has set foot in the town.
The gang that is said to be targeting only men creates multiple fake accounts and enlists females to set the trap by befriending the men through Facebook chats.
Eventually, the woman video calls the man and starts performing obscene acts, while encouraging him to do the same. In most cases, the man follows suit and the fraudsters record the screen. What follows is a series of messages from the woman threatening to share the video unless the victim sends money.
At times, scamsters take screenshots of the face from the video call and superimpose it on someone else’s body to make it appear as a sex chat. Then, with naked video recordings as evidence, the gang blackmails the victim, threatening to upload their photos on social media and send them to their friends and relatives.
“For men only. Be careful. Do not make half-naked video calls on WhatsApp with people you met on Facebook. They record that video call and threaten you, blackmail you, and demand money,” the police tweeted.
