Milestone Minimally Invasive Heart procedure performed successfully at NIMS

Doctors at NIMS, Hyderabad, have successfully performed a minimally invasive heart valve replacement on a 37-year-old woman suffering from severe pulmonary regurgitation years after childhood surgery for Tetralogy of Fallot, avoiding traditional open-heart surgery and enabling faster recovery

Hyderabad: Doctors at the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) have successfully performed an advanced, minimally invasive heart valve replacement on a 37-year-old woman, avoiding traditional open-heart surgery.

The patient was suffering from severe pulmonary regurgitation, a condition in which blood leaks backward through the pulmonary valve, years after undergoing childhood surgery for Tetralogy of Fallot (ToF), a congenital heart defect.

To treat the condition, the cardiology team implanted a Harmony transcatheter valve through a blood vessel. The minimally invasive procedure restored normal blood flow without requiring open-heart surgery, enabling a faster recovery and improving the patient’s quality of life.

The procedure was led by Dr N Rama Kumari, Head of the Department of Cardiology, along with a team of specialists, including Dr Sunitha A, Dr K Uma Devi and Dr R Pradeep, a press release from NIMS Hospital said on Friday
