Hyderabad: The Ministry of Railways has approved the upgradation of the electric traction system between Medchal–Mudkhed and Mahabubnagar–Dhone sections, covering major portions of Telangana and small stretches in Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra.
The project, estimated to cost Rs 193.26 crore for the Medchal–Mudkhed section and Rs 122.81 crore for the Mahbubnagar–Dhone section, aims to enhance the existing traction system.
According to the South Central Railway (SCR) authorities, the upgrade involves modifications to circuit breakers, switching stations, and the installation of additional conductors, significantly improving power efficiency and reliability.
Spanning 225 route km between Medchal and Mudkhed, and 184 route km between Mahabubnagar and Dhone, these single-line sections form vital links connecting northern and southern India through Telangana’s capital region. Electrification of these routes was earlier completed under the Manmad–Mudkhed–Dhone electrification project, enabling seamless passenger and freight train movement.
The upgraded traction system is expected to allow higher train speeds, better voltage stability, and enhanced energy efficiency, while also providing redundancy to maintain operations even if one circuit fails.
Fewer traction substations will be required, further improving operational cost-efficiency and enabling smoother train movement for passenger and freight services, SCR officials said.
