Hyderabad: Tuesday’s heavy downpour and rains that lashed since September resulted in heavy inflows to minor irrigation tanks in Ranga Reddy and Medchal-Malkajgiri districts with over 1,359 minor irrigation tanks in the two districts receiving surplus water as against its full reservoir levels. Around 1,025 tanks out of 2,031 in Ranga Reddy district and 334 out of 489 in Medchal-Malkajgiri district received surplus inflows this time. Twenty-nine tanks developed breaches in Ranga Reddy district and nine in Medchal- Malkajgiri, according to officials from the Irrigation department.
The surplus inflow led to inundation of several houses at nearby colonies abutting the tanks. Such was the flow of the rain that the Nalla Cheruvu abutting Hyderabad-Warangal highway in Uppal was flooded, obstructing the traffic after Tuesday’s downpour that continued till early Wednesday.
As many as 135 tanks in Manchal and 113 in Abdullapurmet and Hayathnagar received surplus inflows while 95 in Maheswaram like Timmaikunta, Errakunta, Laxmankunta, Fatehsagar tank and Pedda Cheruvu among other water bodies got more rainwater.
Forty minor irrigation tanks in Tondupally, Brahmanala kunta, Durgamathakunta, Kothakunta, Mamillakunta in Shamshabad got surplus water while 27 more tanks were filled to the brim.
The situation was same in Medchal-Malkajgiri district too. Out of 125 tanks in Medchal, 66 got surplus water while 64 out of 91 tanks in Shamirpet received more inflows. Many tanks in Keesara, Ghatkesar, Muduchintapally and Gandimaisamma got surplus rainwater.
Irrigation department Chief-Engineer, Minor Irrigation, (IB Division) A Ranga Reddy said most tanks on the city suburbs in Ranga Reddy and Medchal-Malkajgiri districts received more inflows due to heavy rainfall this monsoon.
