Mizoram has 48 drug rehabilitation centres serving over 5,200 people

Mizoram currently has 48 centres and homes providing care and rehabilitation to 5,224 people affected by drug addiction, officials said. The state has provided Rs 42 lakh in assistance this year, while its Hulhliap detoxification centre has treated 2,255 people

Aizawl: Mizoram currently has 48 centres and homes providing care and rehabilitation services to 5,224 people affected by drug addiction, officials said on Sunday. The state government has so far provided Rs 42 lakh as financial assistance to these centres and homes during the current year, they said.

In addition, a total of 2,255 people have been admitted for treatment at an ‘Hulhliap’ short-stay centre, a detoxification facility, and nine batches have been completed since its launch in June last year, one of the officials said. The government has spent over Rs 3.86 crore on the nine batches, while the centre has also received assistance amounting to Rs 1.34 lakh from other sources, he said.

The ‘Hulhliap’ short-stay centre for drug addicts was opened on June 23 at Synod Revival camping centre at Neihbawi near Aizawl. It is a detoxification centre, which is designed to accommodate about 200 inmates at a time.

“The inmates are initially given detoxification treatment for 15 days by doctors, nurses and counsellors, after which they undergo special spiritual counselling,” another official said. After their period of stay at the centre is over, they are sent to their relatives or referred to a rehabilitation centre, he said.
