Jagtial: Congress leader and former MPTC Maru Ganga Reddy (58), a close aide of MLC T Jeevan Reddy, was murdered by unidentified persons in Jabithapur of Jagtial rural mandal on Tuesday morning.

The accused rammed Ganga Reddy’s bike with a car from behind and later attacked him indiscriminately with knives. Ganga Reddy sustained severe injuries in the incident. His family members tried to shift him to a hospital but he died on the way. MLC Jeevan Reddy rushed to Jagtial government hospital where the body of Ganga Reddy was kept.

Enraged over the incident, Jeevan Reddy along with his followers staged a dharna on the Jagtial-Dharmapuri main road demanding the police arrest the accused immediately and take action.

Stating that he lost his brother, Jeevan Reddy said that miscreants killed Ganga Reddy with a perfect plan. Though the Congress was in power in the State, there was no security for Congress leaders in the district and BRS rule was being continued in Jagtial, he alleged.

Vehicular traffic came to a halt as Congress activists staged dharna on the road. Police diverted the traffic through the bypass road. It was not clear whether land disputes or political rivalry were reasons for the murder.

Huge police deployments could be seen in the village as well as in Jagtial to prevent any untoward incidents.
