Toronto: As Prime Minister Narendra Modi heads to Canada for the G7 Summit in Kananaskis at the invitation of Canadian PM Mark Carney, Indian communities across North America are buzzing with excitement. This marks Modi’s first trip to Canada after a year of tense diplomacy, and many see it as a pivotal moment to rebuild strained ties.

Shilpi, an Indian-Canadian, says the visit feels like having “one of our own” come home. She calls it “a moment of huge joy and celebration” and believes Canada’s invitation signals stronger trade and closer ties ahead.

Kajal shares that even living abroad, she takes pride in Modi’s G7 invite. “It’s a big deal,” she notes, viewing the meeting as a clear sign that India-Canada relations are on the mend. She also highlights India’s leap from “underdeveloped” to the world’s fourth-largest economy under Modi’s leadership.

Tripti Soni echoes her optimism, “Every Indian feels proud. I truly believe this visit will restore the warmth between our two nations.” She expects the renewed dialogue to make Indo-Canadian bonds “good again.”

Relations hit a rough patch in 2023 after then-PM Justin Trudeau made unverified allegations against India, claims New Delhi vehemently denied. India, in turn, accused Canada of sheltering extremist elements and ignoring attacks on its diplomats. Now, with the summit and Modi’s visit on the horizon, both sides appear ready to move forward and embrace fresh cooperation.
