Hyderabad: The monsoon may bring cooler temperatures and welcome showers, but it also creates the perfect environment for dandruff to thrive. Increased humidity, excess sweating and a damp scalp can encourage the growth of yeast that contributes to flaking and itching. While occasional dandruff is common, a few simple changes to your hair care routine can help keep your scalp healthy throughout the season.

Keep your scalp clean

Rain, sweat and pollution can build up on the scalp during the monsoon. Wash your hair regularly with a gentle anti-dandruff shampoo to remove excess oil and prevent flakes from building up. Avoid washing your hair too often, as it can strip away natural oils and lead to dryness.

Don’t leave your hair wet

A damp scalp creates ideal conditions for fungal growth. After getting caught in the rain or washing your hair, dry it thoroughly with a towel. Allow it to air dry or use a hair dryer on a cool setting, if needed.

Avoid heavy hair oils

While oiling has its benefits, leaving oil on the scalp for long periods during humid weather can attract dirt and make dandruff worse for some people. If you oil your hair, apply a light amount and wash it off within a couple of hours.

Choose the right hair products

Opt for shampoos containing ingredients such as zinc pyrithione, ketoconazole or salicylic acid if dandruff is persistent. These ingredients help control flakes while keeping the scalp healthy.

Eat for a healthy scalp

A balanced diet rich in protein, zinc, omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins supports overall scalp health. Staying hydrated is equally important, even during the rainy season.

Keep hair accessories clean

Brushes, combs, towels and pillowcases can collect oil, dirt and product residue over time. Cleaning them regularly helps reduce the risk of transferring bacteria and fungi back to the scalp.

Know when to see a dermatologist

If dandruff is severe or accompanied by redness, pain or excessive hair fall, consult a dermatologist. Persistent flaking may be linked to conditions such as seborrheic dermatitis or scalp psoriasis, which require medical treatment rather than home remedies.
