Monsoon leaves roads in Hyderabad’s northeastern colonies riddled with potholes

Rain-damaged roads and waterlogged potholes have made commuting hazardous across Hyderabad's northeastern colonies, including Sainikpuri, Neredmet and Yapral. Residents say temporary repairs are ineffective and have urged authorities to undertake emergency road restoration and desilting of clogged catch pits.

Hyderabad: The key internal arterial stretches and residential lanes in the city’s north-eastern colonies have taken a severe beating, making life difficult for residents during the ongoing monsoon season.

Residents across Sainikpuri, A.S. Rao Nagar, Neredmet, Yapral, Saket, Nagaram, and Dammaiguda are reporting that stagnant rainwater has completely eroded outer bitumen layers, turning the inner routes into hazardous obstacle courses of deep potholes and loose gravel.

While several internal lanes have received cement concrete (CC) roads, a major network of vital black-top bitumen roads continues to remain vulnerable, now riddled with deep potholes submerged in stagnant rainwater and sewage.

The situation is particularly acute along the high-density Vijaya High School road (Goudapuri Colony), Easwaribai Colony near Kapra lake, Hi-tension road, Pradhampuri colony, internal roads connecting Ashok Colony to Netaji Nagar, Sriram Nagar, Malla Reddy colony, Prankruthik Vihar, Yapral, Swarandhra Colony, Balaji Nagar main road and Vivekanandapuram main road near College of Defence Management (CDM).

Monsoon

“We are in constant touch with the Medchal-Malkajgiri authorities regarding the wretched state of our internal roads, but we only get the standard reply that repairs will happen after the monsoon. Temporary fixes like dumping stone dust and black tar into potholes simply wash away in the next spell of rain. The entire neighborhood has turned into a commuter’s nightmare,” says T Ashok Kumar, senior member of Federation of Northeastern Colonies of Secunderabad.

Motorists, especially two-wheeler riders, are facing immense difficulty because the submerged potholes are invisible under murky rainwater. Daily commuting times have doubled during peak hours.

“Navigating these colony lanes feels like driving through open riverbeds. Rainwater hides deep potholes, leading to frequent skids and minor accidents near school zones and local markets,” says Omprakash Dhauliya, a regular commuter of Neredmet-Sainikpuri border stretch.

The local resident welfare associations (RWAs) are demanding immediate, temporary stone-dust filling, along with emergency clearing of clogged catch pits to prevent further road damage.
