Hyderabad: The eerie silence will give way to the whirring sounds of the speeding cycles as the participants will match their skills at the SATS Velodrome in Osmania University in the 72nd National Track Cycling Championship that will be held from Saturday for five days.
It will be a testing for the cyclists and the organisers as it is being held amidst the second wave of Covid-19 pandemic. The organisers insist that they have taken care of health protocols for the smooth conduct of the tournament.
A total of 600 cyclists will be seen in action in the boys & girls under-14, boys & girls under-16, boys & girls under-18, men & women and seniors group. Former international Maxwell Trevor said it is nice to see so many cyclists at this wonderful venue. “Some exciting races are on the cards. The last National was held way back in 2004,’’ he said.
According to Trevor, cyclists like Esow Alben of Andamans, James Singh (Manipur), Rajit can sizzle with their performances in the sprint events. The cyclists from Andamans and Manipur could dominate the sprint events while Railways and Services cyclists could hog the limelight in individual pursuit and time trials events.
Hosts Telangana’s challenge will be led by young Ashirwad Sagar in the under-16 time trial event. “We have good chances of winning medals in the under-16 section,’’ said Trevor.
Rajasthan, Kerala and Haryana cyclists could fight for top honours in the junior section. The championship ends on March 31.
