Kumram Bheem Asifabad: Nature lovers discovered a rare medicinal plant Arisaema Triphyllum on the premises of a famed cave temple on the outskirts of Arjun Loddi village in Tiryani mandal recently.

The nature aficionados P Shyamsudar Reddy and V Rammurthy belonging to Mancherial town claimed that they spotted the rare plants grown on the rocks and on the banks of a tiny stream that flows near the shrine, when they were visiting it on October 31. They said that they have never seen such a unique plant.

“AriseamTriphyllum is a wild edible plant. Tribal communities consume its tuber as supplementary food during drought by digging it from the earth. The yellow coloured fruit like part is an inflorescence stemmed out of the plant,” Botany Assistant Professor at the Satavahana University of Karimnagar, E Narasimha Murthy told Telangana Today.

Narashima Murthy, who extensively researched ethnobotany and traditional botanical knowledge of indigenous species belonging to the erstwhile Adilabad district, stated that Arisaema was a geophyte. He opined that botanists could study the food habits of the ethnic tribes and find out secrets of their health. He added that tribals traditionally eat many tubers to satiate hunger.

The Botanist further said that Arisaema plants were commonly known as Jack-in-the-pulpit or brown dragon or Indian turnip. They belong to the Araceae family. They grow in wet soil in part shade to full shade. They need constantly moist soil rich in organic matter. They have been traditionally used to treat various ailments such as resolving phlegm, dampness, and to treat asthma, bronchitis, cold, cough, and laryngitis etc.
