Hyderabad: After a hiatus of two years due to the pandemic, Parsis in the city celebrated Navroz in fire temples across the city with authentic Parsi food and entertainment programmes.

The Parsi Agiary in Secunderabad, one of the oldest Parsi temples in the country, welcomed the New Year with a prayer meeting in the morning. Over 200 people turned up for the celebrations and took part in the festivities.

Speaking of the celebrations, Zubin Kapadia, a regular visitor at the Fire temple said: “We did not get to celebrate for two years because of Covid. We are happy that we were able to celebrate and meet everyone this year. We also made sure to wear masks for safety.”

Parsis usually start decorating their homes with flowers and lights the day before Navroz and place books and fruits in the worship space.

“We love to eat our favourite biryani and Double ka Meetha on Navroz. There is also this authentic Parsi food we have, Patra Ni Macchi. It is a mix of our favorite food and a lot of sweets,” he said.

Both Zoroastrian Club and Fire Temple in Secunderabad have arranged for festive dinner, musical performances and games like tambola.

Marking the beginning of Farvardin, the first month of the Solar Hijri calendar, Navroz is the Iranian New Year usually celebrated on March 21 every year.

Parsis, who are of Persian descent, believe it to be an auspicious day to do good deeds. Most visit Fire Temple, cook delicious Parsi food, entertain guests and celebrate their rich culture.
