Hyderabad: The Nehru Zoological Park conducted an awareness show on snakes and a cloud photography exhibition as part of the 72nd Wildlife Week celebrations in the zoo premises here on Sunday.
Zoo Education Officer Ch Deepak Tharun gave a live demonstration and detailed about the role played by snakes in the biodiversity, facts and myths on snakes.
Tharun explained to the visitors that there are two types of snakes – venomous and non-venomous snakes. The venomous snakes are King cobra, Spectacled Cobra, Vipers, Kraits etc.
In nature, most of the snakes are non-venomous and are farmers’ friends. The rat snake and other snakes like Sand Boa and Green Vine commonly eat rats, lizards, frogs, insects and small mammals, he said. About 5,000 visitors participated in the programme.
Zoo curator J Vasantha said every single living being in nature plays a vital role in maintaining biodiversity. “Snakes also play a role in nature. Many misunderstandings, myths and misbeliefs are the main reasons for their killings”, she added.
B Laxman, Assistant Curator-3, K Venkat Rao, Forest Section Officer and HM Hanifulla, PRO NZP Hyderabad among others also participated in the programme.
