Hyderabad: Following the record-breaking popularity of K-dramas such as Squid Game, Hellbound and Vincenzo, OTT streamer Netflix has announced that they are launching more than 25 Korean shows in 2022, its largest number to date. The list will include Money Heist: Korean Joint Economic Area, Thirty-Nine, and Seoul Vibe among others.
According to a release by the platform, Korean shows dominated global popular culture in 2021 with Squid Game alone becoming the streamer’s biggest show ever, most viewed in 94 countries. Also, 95 per cent of Squid Game’s viewership came from outside Korea and led viewers to explore more K-content on Netflix.
The upcoming Korean shows will include shows like Money Heist: Korean Joint Economic Area which is an adaptation of the popular Spanish series La Casa De Papel, female-led Thirty-Nine which revolves around the life of three female friends as they turn 40, action-thriller Seoul Vibe which is set in the backdrop of 1988 Olympic Games.
Korean shows in 2022 on Netflix will offer a variety of genres including romantic drama Forecasting Love and Weather, fantasy drama The Sound of Magic, dystopian drama Black Knight, zombie thriller All of Us Are Dead, legal drama Juvenile Justice, Remarriage and Desires, The Accidental Narco, Somebody, and Jung E among many others.
K-dramas have taken India by storm ever since the country went into one of the world’s strictest coronavirus lockdowns. According to a Netflix report, between 2019 and 2020, viewership of K-dramas in India had increased by 370 per cent. For many, the affair began with one of the 500 Korean offerings available on Netflix: Boys Over Flowers, Descendants of the Sun, Reply 1988, Kingdom, and Sky Castle. According to fans, K-dramas are better than Indian soaps since they are not too long, not too short. There are usually only 16-20 episodes. The shows look very Indian in their mood and emotions.
India’s Zee Group-owned satellite service provider Dish TV launched a daily package for 1.3 rupees (less than 2 cents) where customers could access Korean dramas dubbed in Hindi. Popular streaming platform MX Player offered K-dramas dubbed in Hindi and two regional languages, Tamil and Telugu.
