Hyderabad: The arrest of ‘iBomma’ founder Ravi in the high-profile digital piracy case a few days ago has unexpectedly sparked a wave of support from netizens on social media, with several users debating movie pricing and industry practices.
Ironically, platforms like X and Instagram saw posts praising Ravi as a ‘hero’, with many users going to unusual lengths to defend him.
One X user wrote, “He’s not a criminal. He’s the reason middle-class families can watch movies. For us, he’s nothing short of a saviour.” Another post that went viral compared him to the Tamil superstar. “People worship film heroes who charge Rs.50 crore. Why can’t we respect the man who made movies accessible? He’s our Rajinikanth.”
A few users even suggested pooling funds to push for his release. “If needed, we’ll contribute. Let’s get Ravi out. He helped millions of us,” one story on Instagram read.
However, the debate also reflected structural issues within the film industry. Many viewers argued that high ticket prices and expensive OTT subscriptions are pushing the public towards piracy.
“A movie trip for my family costs almost Rs.2,000. OTT is no different, about Rs.3,000 a year. How is the common man supposed to keep up?” wrote a user on X.
Another user questioned star remunerations as well. “If the film industry wants to stop piracy, start with reducing ticket prices and controlling hero remuneration. Don’t blame the public.”
On the other hand, Cybercrime officials warned that such emotional support could normalise piracy and encourage the rise of similar platforms even after enforcement actions.
