Khammam: Alleged dowry harassment and mental torture by her husband and in-laws led to the death by suicide of a newlywed woman from Khammam at KPHB Colony in Hyderabad.
According to her family members, the deceased, Maloth Pujitha of Salebanjar in Konijerla mandal, married Jatoth Srinivas of the same village on April 16. Her parents, Maloth Srinivas and Nagamani, had chosen Srinivas as their son-in-law, hoping their daughter would remain close to them.
However, the couple moved to Hyderabad soon after the wedding, as Srinivas worked as a salesman at a jewellery shop in KPHB. The couple lived in a rented house in the colony. On Saturday night, Srinivas reportedly returned home from work and found Pujitha hanging from the ceiling fan. He then informed her family about the incident.
Pujitha’s grandmother, M Bhadramma, lodged a complaint with the KPHB police, accusing Srinivas and his family members of abetting Pujitha’s suicide. She alleged that Srinivas, his mother Achhali, father Phool Singh, sister Jyothi, and relatives Veeranna and Lalitha regularly harassed Pujitha for dowry.
Further, the complainant stated that a relative of Srinivas had sent him a video clip via a social media app, showing Pujitha having a soft drink with some of her relatives during a recent visit to their village. These individuals were reportedly not on good terms with Srinivas’s family.
Using the video as a pretext, Srinivas and his family allegedly accused Pujitha of infidelity and subjected her to emotional and physical abuse, the family claimed.
Based on Bhadramma’s complaint, a case was registered under Section 80 (dowry harassment) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against Srinivas and five of his family members. An investigation is underway, KPHB Sub-Inspector of Police Lingam told the media.
