Hyderabad: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Friday said the Andhra Pradesh government would be held responsible for constructing Rayalaseema Lift Irrigation Scheme (RLIS) in violation of norms.
It has also said that there was no need to take action against the AP Chief Secretary on charges pertaining to contempt of court in connection with the RLIS case.
Stating that the RLIS should not be taken up without the approval of environmental clearances from the Central government, the NGT has constituted a four-member committee with experts to review the construction.
A regional officer from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, an officer from the Ministry of Jal Shakti and Central Design Committee member would be members in the committee.
Telangana opposed RLIS, which lifts water for Potireddypadu canal, on the ground that it is being illegally constructed on Krishna River without any environment clearance and without water allocation.
Terming RLIS as illegal, the Telangana government has earlier said that it would fight on all available platforms to protect the interests of the State’s farmers and its rightful share of the Krishna river water.
