Hyderabad: The works on infrastructure projects aimed at easing traffic issues around KBR Park, proposed by the previous BRS government under the Strategic Road Development Programme (SRDP), have taken off following a nod from the National Green Tribunal (NGT).

In 2016, the then MA&UD minister KT Rama Rao took the initiative to build flyovers and underpasses to ease traffic congestion in the heart of the city under SRDP. Following the NGT clearance, GHMC now aims to complete the proposed structures in two phases within two years.

GHMC commissioner RV Karnan told Telangana Today that clearance was received from NGT and added, “We have decided to go ahead with the proposal to build the flyovers and underpasses and complete them in two years.”

Soil tests are underway for the proposed flyovers and underpasses, now under the H-CITI Hyderabad City Innovative and Transformative Infrastructure programme. The testing is being carried out at two places along the stretch from the TDP office to the LV Prasad Eye Institute. A senior GHMC official said soil tests were first conducted in 2017 and after a gap of eight years, they have now been taken up again.

The project aims to create signal-free junctions and prevent heavy traffic around KBR Park for commuters travelling towards the IT Corridor, including Madhapur, Hitec City, Gachibowli and Kondapur, and up to Manikonda.

“The GHMC initiated the Y-type underpasses and flyovers with an estimated cost of Rs 826 crore. In the revised plans, we are using pre-fab steel piers instead of multi-level grade separators and road widening around the park,” the GHMC official explained.

Once the infrastructure is in place, officials said commuters moving clockwise would travel through a series of underpasses, while traffic moving counter clockwise would flow through a series of flyovers. “Motorists can have conflict-free commuting in an uninterrupted manner. Keeping in view issues during the rainy season, we have prepared designs for rainwater retention structures at the underpasses to ensure they do not become bottlenecks.”

GHMC has approached traffic higher-ups to regulate traffic around KBR Park when works commence to avoid inconvenience to commuters.
