Hyderabad: Mohammed Akram alias Imran Khan alias Khaled was among the three Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists who got 10 years rigorous imprisonment for planning to kill prominent Hindu leaders, journalists, politicians and police officers in different cities including Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Nanded to create terror in the society.

The special court for NIA cases awarded the sentence to Akram along with Mohammed Muzammil and Mohammed Sadiq in the Nanded LeT case on Tuesday.

The case was initially registered at ATS Kalachowki, Mumbai in August 2012 under Arms Act relating to recovery of firearms. Initial investigation had revealed that the accused were members of banned terrorist organisation LeT and Harkat-ul-Jihad-e-Islami (HuJI), according to a press release.

Accordingly, Sections of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act were invoked in the case. The NIA had re-registered the case and taken over the investigation. Investigation has revealed that Akram went to Saudi Arabia under the guise of seeking employment as a driver with the help of wanted accused, Mohammed Abdul Majeed, a native of Hyderabad presently settled in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

During his stay in Saudi Arabia, Akram was introduced to various LeT members/operatives including absconding accused Siddique Bin Usman alias Abu Hanzala alias Abdul Brai and Furkhan Bhai alias Abdullah, both natives of Hyderabad as well as Mohamed Shaeed Faisal alias Ustad, a native of Bangalore and settled in Saudi Arabia.

Investigation has further revealed that Akram and other accused had held conspiracy meetings at Riyadh and Dammam, Saudi Arabia to carry out targeted killings of prominent Hindu leaders, journalists, politicians and police officers in various parts of India.

Akram was then sent back to India for executing these killings in different cities including Bangalore, Hyderabad and Nanded to create terror in the society. He had assigned the task of identifying suitable targets to his old associates Mohameed Muzzamil and Mohammed Sadiq from Nanded.

They all had travelled to Hyderabad in June, 2012 to meet Obaid-Ur-Rehaman, a resident of Hyderabad and associate of Akram and one of the charge-sheeted arrested accused in the case probed by the Hyderabad unit NIA, for identification of suitable targets for carrying out the terror acts.

Further investigation in the case continues to trace and apprehend the absconding accused persons.
