Nirmal: The appearance of a cobra at Sri Raja Rajeshwara Swamy temple on Mahashivaratri festival day has sent hundreds of Shiva devotees into raptures and people thronged the temple at Godisharala village in Dasturabad mandal in droves to offer puja to the snake.

The cobra was seen at the at the Shiva Linga for a long time, even as devotees offered puja and lit lamps even as the word spread like a literal wildfire on social media platforms. There was so much crowd at the temple that police had to move in to regulate crowds.

Believed to be the only ornament on the neck of Lord Shiva, the Indian cobra slithered into the temple and was seen at the pedestal on Tuesday midnight. As surprised devotees thronged the temple shooting photos and videos to be shared on social media platforms, special puja was conducted by the temple priest Sidam Laxman Swamy.

Laxman Swamy told pressmen that the snake has been visiting the the temple on the auspicious day for the past five years. He said that devotees were excited to spot the cobra on the premises of the shrine and worshipped it. It is a rarity that a reptile would slither into a temple on Mahashivratri. “It can’t be a coincidence”, he felt.

There was such a rush at the temple that Khanapur Inspector Ajay Babu and Kadem Sub-Inspector D Jyothimani and other police officials had to rush to the spot to ensure there was no stampede.
