Hanamkonda: Constructing a railway bridge 359 meters above the Chenab riverbed was one of the toughest phases in realising India’s century-old dream of connecting Jammu and Srinagar by rail, Prof. Madhavi Latha of Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore.
An alumna of NITW, Prof. Madhavi Latha shared her experiences and insights from her 17-year-long involvement in the planning, design and construction of the world’s highest railway bridge over the Chenab River, at the inaugural of the institute’s technical fest, Technozion 2025 on Friday.
The height and dimensions of the bridge, steep slopes, harsh terrain, heterogeneous and anisotropic rock mass with closely spaced joints, the presence of the river below, and the adverse climatic and seismic conditions of the region posed a great challenge during construction, she said.
Prof. Madhavi Latha emphasised that the success of such a monumental project stemmed from the synergy between design precision, field decisions, and collaborative expertise. Her presentation inspired students and faculty alike reinforcing the value of technical excellence.
NITW Director Prof. Bidyadhar Subudhi, unable to attend the event in person, addressed the gathering virtually. This year Technozion hosts 23 events by major clubs, 31 events by departmental societies, a diverse range of workshops, expert lectures and competitions.
National-level gaming and coding marathon The Blaze, innovation and entrepreneurship showcase- Shark Tank 2.0, Rocket Design and Launch (Launchpad), airplane model built within two days, Bomb’s Away, exhibition of self-healing materials and smart alloys, Metalusion and earthquake resistant building design challenge were among the events being held.
