Hyderabad: The Jubilee Hills bypoll is witnessing a contest among 58 candidates, of whom 22 are non-local individuals and 36 are from within the city, the District Election Office announced following the withdrawal of nominations.
Among the non-local contenders are four from Karimnagar, three each from Nalgonda and Nizamabad, and two candidates each from Khammam, Yadadri-Bhongir, Mahbubnagar and Vikarabad. Additionally, one candidate each is from Jangaon, Hanamkonda, Sangareddy and Suryapet.
The non-local candidates are contesting on varied agendas, including job notifications, improvement of basic amenities, and Scheduled Caste classification issues. Some are also seeking to strengthen their respective parties.
Kandarpally Kashinath, a 30-year-old unemployed youth from Jukkal in Nizamabad district, is contesting as an independent candidate. He is the only highly qualified contestant among the 58, holding an MSc in Botany, an MSc in Psychology, and an MA in Islamic Studies. “My fight is for unemployed youth. Though the Congress came to power, no job notifications for Group I and II have been released yet. I qualified for the Group II exam, but due to court litigation, the government has not yet processed it,” Kashinath told Telangana Today.
Another independent candidate, Poosa Srinivas from Yadadri-Bhongir district, belongs to the Gangaputra community and aims to secure support from his fisherfolk community, which has a significant presence in the constituency.
Theety Sudhakar Rao, an independent candidate and former senior leader in the YSRCP, said, “As the YSRCP is not interested in contesting in Telangana and did not give me a ticket in the earlier Assembly polls, I quit the party and am contesting as an independent candidate.”
Bogam Chiranjeevi from Karimnagar and Manthri Narasimhaiah from Mahbubnagar are also contesting as independents, focusing their campaigns on SC classification, representing a community that constitutes nearly 25 per cent of voters in the Jubilee Hills constituency.
City-based political analysts attributed the large number of non-local candidates to the vibrant social and political landscape of the Jubilee Hills constituency. The diversity of its population and the opportunities it offers for political visibility and influence make it an attractive arena for candidates from across Telangana.
