Adilabad: A notorious smuggler of banned gutka products was finally arrested during a joint operation by officials of the special branch and Adilabad I town police on Wednesday. Gutka products worth Rs 2 lakh were seized from his warehouse. Disclosing details of the arrest, Superintendent of Police D Uday Kumar said that Mohammad Akram of Bokkalaguda had stored large quantities of prohibited gutka products in a warehouse at Bhuktapur. During the raids the contraband was seized and he was arrested and handed over to Adilabad I town police.
He was one of four kingpins who were involved in smuggling of the products.
Uday Kumar said that the district police were aiming at eradication of both smuggling of gutka and matka, a form of gambling. He said 17 cases were booked against Akram so far and a suspect sheet was opened on his name. He commended efforts of the teams which apprehended the alleged smuggler. Adilabad DSP Venkateshwar Rao, Inspectors S Ramakrishna, Mallesh and Krishnamurthy, SIs Anwar-Ul-Huq, G Apparao, Ravinder, Kaleem, Constables Chindam Devidas, B Yesudas and many others were present.
