Kothagudem: The Bhadrachalam town police have registered an FIR against a non-resident Indian (NRI) in the United States and his family members here in a dowry harassment case.

The FIR was registered following a complaint by a woman, Pakalapati Pujitha of Shantinagar Colony, Bhadrachalam against her husband Thalluri Praveen Raja, his parents Prabhakar and Manimala and their elder son Preetham. They were booked under Section 85 (Cruelty by a husband or his relatives towards a woman) of BNS and Sections 4 (Penalty for demanding dowry) and 5 (Agreement for giving or taking dowry to be void) of the Dowry Prohibition Act.

Pujitha in her complaint to police said she had got married to Praveen Raja on July 27, 2021. Immediately after the marriage, her husband and in-laws started subjecting her to mental and physical torture demanding additional dowry, she said. All these continued for six months after the marriage. After some time, the couple moved to the US, where she worked in the software sector. But Praveen Raja continued the same in the US as well as and used to transfer Pujitha’s earnings to his brother Preetham’s bank account.

Pujitha alleged that whenever her in-laws visited them in the US, they used to torture her. She came to India on January 13 along with her son after her husband booked a ticket asking her to go to her maternal house to bring dowry. However, according to her she went to her in-laws house, where she was tortured again, following which she moved to her maternal house.

She complained there was a threat to her life and the lives of her child and her parents from her husband and appealed to the police to take action against the accused. Bhadrachalam CI B Ramesh is investigating.
