Officials on high alert as rains lash Khammam

Khammam: Normal life was hit hard with the heavy rains lashed many parts in erstwhile Khammam district since Sunday night and the rainfall continued on Monday with the passing over of cyclone Gulab.
The highest rainfall of 12.6 cm was recorded in Wyra mandal, followed by 11.1 cm in Konijerla, 11.7 cm in Kamepalli mandal of Khammam. In Kothagudem, Dammapet and Aswaraopet witnessed rainfall of above 10 cm in the past 24 hours.
On Monday from 8.30 am to 4 pm, there has been a heavy downpour as Bachodu in Tirumalayapalem mandal, Wyra (ARS) and Wyra town have received 15.1cm, 14.1 cm and 11.3 cm rainfall. Several other mandals in both the districts also recorded heavy rainfall.
As a result, many streams were overflowing and trees were uprooted and fell on the roads at several places disrupting the vehicular traffic in the district. With flood waters inundating the roads at Illur and Konataatmakur on Telangana-AP borders vehicles movement was stopped.
With two streams, Nimmavagu at Anjanapuram and Pagideru at Teegala banjar in Konijerla mandal overflowing, road connectivity to around 20 villages was cut off. The police have closed a road from Pallipadu to Enkoor to avoid any untoward incidents.
Transport Minister Puvvada Ajay Kumar asked all line departments to coordinate and monitor the rain situation to prevent any loss of life. MP, Nama Nageswara Rao, who is in New Delhi, called the district officials over phone enquired about the rain situation .
Khammam District Collector, VP Gautham, held a teleconference with Commissioner of Police, Vishnu S Warrier, Additional Collectors, Snehalatha M and N Madhusudhan and other district officials.
He wanted all departments to work in coordination for the next 48 hours to prevent loss of life. People living in low lying areas have to be shifted immediately to relief centres and provide them food and other facilities, he said.
Gautham informed that a round the clock call centre has been set up at district collectorate and the public could call the toll free number: 1077 or 9063211298 for any kind of assistance.
In Kothagudem too, a control room with the number: 08744-241950 was set up and a WhatsApp number: 9392919743 was made available for the public to pass on information on floods. Tahsildars were told to shift people in low lying areas to relief centres.
