Old City roads in Hyderabad battered by rain; potholes and flooding raise commuter risk
Commuters in Hyderabad’s Old City are facing hazardous conditions as continuous rains worsen potholes and cause road erosion. Several roads are flooded, and many women have stopped using two-wheelers due to safety concerns. Locals demand urgent civic intervention.
Hyderabad: The road conditions have worsened in several areas of the old city due to the continuous spells of rains.
The motorists driving on the Misrigunj, Fateh Darwaza, Teegalkunta, Nawab Sahab Kunta, Amannagar, Fatehshahnagar, G M Chowni, Ghousenagar, Golconda roads are facing problems.
“The small potholes have widened following the rains and offer a back breaking ride to the motorists. When it rains the roads are more dangerous as potholes are covered with water,” complained Mirza Mahmood Baig, a resident of Teegalkunta.
For fear of falling down on the road, several women have stopped moving around on two wheelers. “I am hiring an auto rickshaw to go anywhere, the road conditions are so bad that one cannot take the risk of driving around,” complained Ayesha Jahan, a private school teacher.
Several roads such as Aramgarh, Falaknuma, Bandlaguda, Dabeerpura, Chatrinaka, Khilwat, Rajanna Bowli are flooded when it rains heavily. Due to accumulation of water for hours, the roads surface eroded on the busy thoroughfares.
“Two wheelers are slipping due to the presence of sand deposits and pebbles on the road surface. The GHMC sweepers are unable to clear it,” pointed out Srinivas Goud, a resident of Uppuguda.
