Warangal: Much to the joy of city dwellers, one more urban lung space is being developed by the Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation (GWMC). It has taken up the developmental works worth Rs 14.41 crore at Waddepally tank bund under the GWMC limits. The beautification works are also aimed at attracting tourists to the place.

Speaking to Telangana Today, an official of the civic body said they had been developing the bund with a total of Rs 10.50 crore (excluding GST) under the Smart City Mission (SCM) project. As part of this beautification works, a four-metre wide pathway, 3.5 metre-wide cycling and skating track, 12 metre-wide plaza area to set up coffee kiosks and other commercial shops, open gym, viewpoints, greenery, food kiosk, seating arrangements and other amenities.

“We have already installed the open-air gymnasium equipment. The other development works are also moving at a fast pace. We will also be constructing three-grand entrance arches as part of this development project,” the official added.

The authorities are also developing the area for sports activity. “Visitors can play badminton, volleyball and even the cricket at the bund,” the officer said, adding that they would set up solar-powered lights at the bund besides setting up a huge LED screen.

It may be added here that the Kakatiya Urban Development Authority (KUDA) developed the bund at a cost of Rs 3 crore about nine years ago and handed over the beautification project to Warangal Municipal Corporation in 2013. The KUDA has already developed a walking track and benches on the lawns.

Dr Suresh Devath, founder president of the Society for Public Welfare and Initiative (SPWI), appreciated the efforts of the government for taking up the beautification works and hoped that it would become another major tourist attraction in the historic Warangal city which has several tourists places like Kakatiya era Thousand Pillar temple, Fort Warangal, and Bhadrakali tank bund being developed under HRIDAY scheme.

“I think that introduction of boating service in the tank will attract more visitors,” he added.

Meanwhile, MLA Dasyam Vinay Bhaskar, who is regularly reviewing the development works, said that the Waddepally tank bund beautification works would be completed at the earliest for the benefit of city dwellers as well as the people visiting the city. “We are concentrating on developing more urban lung spaces in Warangal West constituency,” he added.
