Karimnagar: BC Welfare and Civil Supplies Minister Gangula Kamalakar on Monday slammed the opposition parties for criticising the distribution of Bathukamma sarees.

“Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao was gifting sarees to womenfolk in the State during Bathukamma festivities, which is the biggest women’s festival in the State. Opposition parties, however, are indulging in cheap politics for their political gains. It is not in our culture to burn sarees. Women will never do it,” the Minister said, after distributing Bathukamma sarees to women in Sapthagiri colony here.

To provide financial assistance for the marriage of poor women, Kalyana Lakshmi scheme has introduced. Rs 13,000 are being provided to lactating women under KCR kit scheme. With similar spirit, Bathukamma sarees have also been present to women as a gift of Bathukamma festival. However, some of the people were politicising the issues.

Christian, Muslims, Hindus and other religious people would pray to their respective gods with flowers. However, in the entire world, Bathukamma was the only festival wherein flowers would be prayed by treating them as god.

Earlier, women used to face difficulties to drop Bathukammas due to lack of water. Some used to drop them in the middle of dried Manair river. However, the problem has been solved with the construction of Kaleshwaram and other irrigation projects after the formation of a separate State.

During the time of separate State agitation, Telangana protagonists used to register their project by playing Bathukamma. But, police used to arrest people.

Chandrashekhar Rao, who achieved a separate State by putting his life at risk, has solved all the problems and introduced a number of schemes such as 24 hours current, Kaleshwaram project, Aasara pensions, Kalyana Lakshmi, KCR kit and others.

Talking about Bathukamma arrangements, the Minister informed that Karimnagar Municipal Corporation was making all arrangements to play Bathukamma in the corporation limits.

Karimnagar Mayor Y Sunil Rao, Deputy Mayor Challa Swaroopa Rani, Commissioner Yadagiri Rao and others participated in the programme.
